Changes to this Privacy Policy

We reserve the right to make changes to this Privacy Policy. The last amendment to this policy was made 19th June 2018.

Rock Oil was started back in 1928 by one Fred Malone, the father of the current chairperson Barbara Hewitt. After leaving his previous profession involving weights and measures, Fred desired a change and something he could really sink his teeth into. Rock Oil ticked over nicely as a small locally based operation until World War 2, when rationing of many raw materials meant the business had to take a back seat. It was post World War 2 when the business really took off, gradually building up custom and purchasing its first sign-written van in 1958.

1966 saw a few major changes with both Barbara and her husband Ted becoming directors of the business. This was also the year when Rock Oil acquired its first tankers allowing them to deal with bulk fuels for the first time. A couple of years later Rock Oil moved site to Wharf Street. Tragically in 1973 the premises burnt to the ground and to make matters worse was uninsured. In 1975 Ted became the Managing Director after Fred sadly passed away; meaning Ted had a serious job on his hands to rebuild the company after the total loss of the building and all materials.

With blending being taken care of by another blender for a short time and backs to the wall, the business slowly but surely recovered. Rock Oil then entered the 1980’s with a rebuilt plant and a return to in-house blending. Now the company had a choice to make: either pile it high and sell cheap or gain some credibility. With serious technical products being developed, it was decided that Rock Oil become involved in racing and the motorcycle market. The need for motorcycle lubricants to be able to perform to the highest possible level was essential because of the high demand on components in motorcycle engines and gearboxes. Technical excellence backed up with the involvement in racing, meant the Rock Oil name quickly became synomonous with top performing motorcycle products.

It was at this time the current Chairman Charles started becoming active in the running of the business and he spent many a wet weekend at race circuits helping establish the Rock Oil brand. The first major team to become involved with Rock Oil was the Kawasaki ‘Team Green’ off-road team. It is fair to say that even to this day Rock Oil are still remembered for their involvement with Kawasaki. It was also during this time that Rock Oil gained its first export customer. Following the mid-1980's Rock Oil built up an increasing level of export sales creating relationships and very close friends all over the world. Towards the end of the 1980's Charles took over as Managing Director due to Ted having some serious health issues. Ted recovered but then took a back seat to leave Charles to handle the day to day running of the firm.

The 1990’s saw a number of major changes for Rock Oil including the move to the present purpose-built site on Priestley Street near to Warrington centre. During this time established lubricant firms were purchased and subsequently brought their business under the Rock Oil banner, these being A.E. Bennetts of Liverpool and Nickerson Lubricants of Halifax, both long standing independent lubricant blenders with their own specialised areas of business. These acquisitions and the new plant meant that Rock Oil was ready for the next phase in its history. Ted maintained a major involvement in the business until sadly he passed away in 2005.

In 2014 Charles stepped down as Managing Director after 25 years in the position and took up a new role as Chairman. Greg Hewitt became Managing Director and took over the reins with the company being the strongest it’s ever been. Charles has been instrumental in driving the company to where it is today and led the company to a record turnover with sales in over 40 countries worldwide. Barbara still plays an active part in the running of her father's business and is as enthusiastic now as when she became a director over 40 years ago. With the next generation of the family now actively involved in the running of the business it won't be long before the Rock Oil story takes a few more twists and turns on its way to celebrating its 100th birthday.

Established in 1928, Rock Oil supply high quality lubricants and fuels for all markets. Our products are manufactured from the finest state of the art synthetic chemicals and oils; they meet and surpass all relevant national and international standards.

Though famous for involvement in motor sport, Rock Oil's major activities are in the agricultural, automotive, commercial, industrial, marine, motorcycle and leisure markets. World Championship winning performances in motor sport have led to blending and manufacturing lubricants for some of the world's top motorcycle, car and engine manufacturers. In the early 1980’s Charles Hewitt, the now Chairman, but at that time fledgling marketing and salesman, took to the fields and circuits and began to build relationships with professional racing teams. The first major partnership was the support of the 'Team Green' Kawasaki Motocross team of the mid eighties which started Rock down the path of motorcycle racing support. So much so that many people still remember the team and Rock’s involvement over 30 years later. David Thorpe, 3 time World 500cc MX Champion, was a part of this team and still runs on Rock Oil a quarter of a century later with his Buildbase Honda MX team. The intervening years have seen a succession of who's who in racing running under the Rock banner.

Here are just a few of those teams and riders:

  • Georges Jobe – World 500cc MX Champion
  • Dave Thorpe - World 500cc MX Champion
  • John Reynolds – 3 Time BSB Champion, GP Rider
  • Jamie Whitham – BSB Champion, World Supersport Rider
  • Steve Hislop – BSB Champion, 11 time TT Champion
  • Darren Dixon and Andy Hetherington - World Sidecar Champions
  • Brad Anderson - Multiple British MX Champion
  • Simon Wigg - Longtrack World Champion
  • Jason Crump – World Speedway Champion
  • Rob McElnea - BSB Champion, GP Rider
  • Reve Racing – British Title Winning Superbike Team
  • Renegade Ducati – British Title Winning Superbike Team
  • Padgetts – Grand Prix Team, British Supersport Champions
  • Pela Renet - World MX3 Champion
  • Tai Woffinden – World Speedway Champion

Rock has also worked in conjunction with just about all the major manufacturers such as Yamaha, Ducati, Suzuki, Honda, Kawasaki and Triumph. This support of racing does not just apply to the very top levels of competition and we have always supported grass roots racing.

Rock are still very much involved in racing support and product development and are still working with major racing teams and individuals from youth level up to world title contenders. Areas supported include grasstrack, karting, motocross, road and track racing, rallying and even a team competing at Le Mans. Also worthy of mention is our involvement in support as diverse as a NASA project and an Everest expedition! This eclectic mix of projects and sports is a testament to the variety of high performing products Rock manufacture and a commitment to producing the very finest lubricants possible.

Rock Oil prides itself on the manufacture of a superb range of performance lubricants serving many industries, being particularly proud of its long involvement and support of motorsport. All products are manufactured from the finest state of the art chemicals and base oils; they meet and surpass all relevant national and international specifications.

Using their vast experience Rock source only the very best raw materials to produce their products, ensuring the highest quality and performance from a basic grease right through to high specification race lubricants. Selection of only the finest raw materials ensures quality is never compromised. An on-site laboratory and blending plant ensures that any customer requirement can be met and satisfied. Rock are signed up to the ATIEL code of practice, with Rock directors working at board level as well as having continual membership for many years of the UKLA and thus the UEIL. Rock has worked hard to develop a superb supply chain and develop strong working relationships with the best partners such as Afton, Infineum, Lubrizol and Oronite for additive technology, Shell, Petronas and Neste for base stocks. All raw materials are provided by the highest quality working partners.

The on-site laboratory is equipped with the very latest technology to help maintain and regulate the quality of all lubricants manufactured. All raw materials are tested upon arrival to ensure quality and once blended each batch of lubricant is tested to ensure the product meets the required standard before sending to a customer. Analysis in our own laboratory is measured down to parts per million such is the level of quality control that is applied to all products. Alongside this stringent quality control, extensive research and development work means that existing ranges are improved and new products are designed to meet emerging standards and approvals. Rock also has a long record of launching innovative products, especially for racing and our top tier racing lubricant Synthesis XRP is testament to this technical prowess.

This commitment to quality has led to Rock Oil being awarded the prestigious BS EN ISO 9001:2015 Quality Assurance Certificate and recommendations by many leading manufacturers such as BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, Volvo, Iveco, Triumph, Kawasaki and Suzuki, plus JASO, NMMA, API, CIK and ACEA accreditation.

Tai Woffinden – World Speedway Champion

“It’s the best oil out there and offers complete reliability. I’m delighted to be working with Rock Oil”

Stuart Hicken, Buildbase BMW

"We have found the products to be superb in every aspect. The latest synthetic oils give a rise in horsepower and the protection against wear is unparalleled. They are without doubt the best oils I have used since I started racing in the 60's. And the brilliant product range is backed up by a fantastic team of people, who are always ready to help. I am very proud that we are supported by Rock Oil.”

Roger Middleton, RMKD Engineering

"Rock Oil every time for me. We use 'Synthesis 4 Racing' and run our engines to 16,100rpm...1,600rpm above their designed engine speed. No mechanical problems whatsoever last season. We used the Guardian prior to raising the rev limit with great success, but were advised by the technical department to up it to the higher spec fully synthetic with the extra rpm we were using. Not a problem with clutch slip as some other brands cause and on inspecting the engine ready for the 2010 season found no wear at all...just as a matter of course i fitted a new cam chain and on setting the valve clearances on the rebuild found only 3 that needed slight adjustment. What more can i say...no dnf's...only off the top step of the podium twice (due to grid allocation) two outright F400 lap records, three club lap records, and a £75 parts bill for the rebuild...Cheap racing I call that and that suggests to me that good oil is worth the money and my money goes with Rock Oil."
