Rock Oil is one of very few remaining British lubricant manufacturers and has been involved with motorcycling and motorsport for well over 30 years. 2016 sees the continuation of the partnership with the British Superbike Series and is the official lubricant to the championship.
Beside the partnership with the BSB series itself, we will be working with the largest ever roster of teams and riders. In the 4 wheel arena the long standing and successful partnership with Japspeed continues in the British Drift Championship. We also embark on our second year with SWR in the Formula 4 series and Albatec in Rally Cross. Both teams are near the top of the tree in terms of profile and the Rock brand is prominent on both machines. A new partnership for 2016 is the tie up with Maximum Motorsport which means branding on a touring car and series sponsorship of both the VAG trophy and the VAG cup.

Rock Oil rider Matej Žagar thwarted a nasty fall to win the Gorzow FIM Speedway Grand Prix of Poland on Saturday night. Racing on his home track Žagar caught another rider's wheel in heat 18, landing awkwardly with his bike nearly clearing a safety fence. Thankfully after being checked out Žagar defied the odds to take the re-run and push for a win. Ultimately claiming his third career SGP win taking him up to 81 Championship points overall.
Fellow Rock rider Tai Woffinden scored a fantastic 18 points over the course of the evening and came third in the final race. Tai is currently leading overall with 109 points in the Championship standings, with clear daylight between him and his nearest rival.
Many of the racers over the evening were keen to send their best wishes to Darcy Ward after sustaining serious spinal damage in Poland last Sunday.
Woffinden had this to say: “I’d also like to send a special message to Darcy, who was watching today. After hearing that crowd tonight, we know there are a lot of people thinking of him and there for him in heart and soul. It’s great to see. We all love him, we’re doing everything we can and we will continue to do that.”
Zagar said: “Speedway can be so cruel and you can be in the wrong place at the wrong time. I can’t say any words about what happened (to Darcy) last week. All I can say to Darcy is I just wish him luck.”
In the World Championship standings for fellow Rock riders Chris 'Bomber' Harris is currently in 13th place with 39 points and Troy Batchelor is in 12th place one point ahead with 40. The next round of the Speedway FIM World Championship will be held at the Stadion Matije Gubca in Krško, Slovenia on Saturday 12th September.
Rock supported rider Peter Hickman scored his first ever double podium finish in the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship for the RAF Reserves BMW team at Cadwell Park, pulling off a sensational last lap move at the Chicane to claim second place.
Hickman had celebrated his first win in the championship at the Lincolnshire circuit last year, but on Sunday gave his best performance of the season to move up the order and prove he intends on being a threat at the front over the final four rounds.
Hickman said: "It's been a tough weekend because I had a big crash yesterday but that's part of the job and you've got to just get on with it. I want to give a massive thanks to the team because they've been mint all weekend and repaired the bike really quickly. It felt really good, if anything it felt maybe better than it did before the crash! My phone hasn't stopped all weekend and the support from the fans has been mega.
"Two podiums in the dry help to put the doubters out and now it's important to carry on this form. It's been a tough year in BSB for me with the first round going well and since then we've kind of gone backwards. We've been a bit unlucky with a few things so hopefully that luck has changed.
"We had to really battle for that one as we didn't have the luxury of the two safety car intervals to have a bit of a rest! I made a bit of a mistake which let Tommy through, I ran wide at Charlies and he just got me as his bike is just a little bit faster than mine, but I sat behind him and he was a bit slower than me in a couple of places including Mansfield, so I thought I would wait for the last lap and let him have it. I just want to thank everyone for their support this weekend.
"Oulton Park is mega and when we tested there earlier in the year I was really close to the lap record but unfortunately had that crash and broke my back and ribs so fingers crossed we'll have a weekend closer to the lap record and less of the crash!"
In the Pirelli National Superstock 1000 Championship Rock rider Josh Elliott charged to victory for Morello Racing. Josh now holds a strong 32 points lead in the title stakes, and yet to finish outside the top two in any race he has taken part in this season. With a definite chance to be crowned 2015 National Superstock 1000 champion.
The next round of the 2015 MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship returns to Oulton Park for the specially named Rock Oil round. A momentous occasion for the company, we're expecting many customers and friends of Rock Oil to attend and enjoy the proceedings. With high profile branding with trackside hoardings, and all key areas within the paddock and prize giving areas. The event starts on the 4th of September and runs until the 6th of September.
Round eight of the Rock Oil sponsored MCE British Superbikes Championship arrives at Cadwell Park this weekend. Known as the 'mini-Nürburgring', Cadwell is the local circuit for Rock supported rider Peter Hickman, where he enjoyed his first British Superbike win last year. Hickman will be keen for a repeat performance this coming weekend, hot on the heels from his success in the Superbike Class at the Ulster GP.
Rock sponsored teams Gearlink Kawasaki, Morello Racing and Motodex BMW will be looking to build on their positions in the support classes.
The event begins on Friday 21st August with a series of warm up sessions, with qualifiers and support races on the Saturday. The MCE BSB action will be supported by a top-class support bill which includes the Motorpoint British Supersport Championship, Pirelli National Superstock 1000 and 600 Championship and British Motostar.
Rock rider Peter Hickman had a stunning Ulster Grand Prix this past weekend. The BSB competitor and now champion Road Racer made the transition from short track BSB racing to win the second Superbike race in dramatic fashion. Peter has already shown he is a major force on the Roads with a great Isle of Mann TT earlier this year.
Riding the Briggs Equipment BMW, it completed a superb day for the 28-year who had earlier claimed a close second in the Superstock race. It was the final race of the day though that gave him his finest moment despite the Superbike race being held in tricky, wet conditions. Reduced in distance from six laps to four, Hickman grabbed the lead the moment the lights turned green and ultimately led from start to finish. In the end there was less than a second between the four top riders, with Hickman snatching an incredible 0.028s lead as he flashed across the line.
Another close result occurred in the morning’s Superstock race which saw the Lincolnshire rider lead for much of the way. For the most part it looked like he’d take the win as he led with just a few corners to go. However, he was pipped to the post by just 0.09s. Next up for Peter was the feature 7-lap Superbike race and this time he was part of a five-rider battle for the race win. Positions changed frequently but with a stunning lap of 133.3mph, Peter moved up to third heading into the sixth lap. However, the red flag soon came out for an incident and with the result declared at the completion of the fourth lap, he was ultimately rewarded a fourth place position.
The Rock supported rider also had two Supersport race outings on the Trooper MV Agusta. The bike was faultless in the two six lap encounters and he was able to take strong sixth and seventh place finishes with a best lap of 127.632mph. The seventh place was even the stronger ride of the two as he was only two seconds off the race win.
Peter Hickman: “What can I say, it’s been a brilliant, brilliant day and to be sitting here now with an International road race win – and a Superbike one at that – is mega. I knew it was tight in the race as it had been all day and had a feeling there was about four or five riders behind me. Conor pushed me really hard on that final lap and I had to ride harder than I wanted to through the final corners. I saw on the big screen TV how close he was though and I had to do that to take the win.”
“I was already peaking after taking second place in the Superstock race even though a slight lack of experience cost me the race win there. I was a bit tentative going into Quarry Bends which allowed Lee to get by but second was still a great result. The Briggs Equipment BMW was also really strong in the feature Superbike race and I genuinely thought I could have got the win. I’d just set the fastest lap of the race at 133.3mph and thought I’d be awarded third but the result went back two laps rather than one and I ended up fourth but I can’t complain.”
“Likewise the Trooper MV Agusta was brilliant and after not completing a lap in practice, to finish sixth and seventh in two really competitive races was fantastic. The bike was flying and the second race in particular was great to be part as we were part of a seven rider group battling for the win. All in all, it’s been a great week here at the Ulster for me so thanks to everyone at Briggs Equipment BMW and Trooper MV Agusta.”
Peter heads back to BSB action in less than two weeks at Cadwell Park, the scene of his first Superbike win last season. With a major Road win under his built and at his favourite circuit, Peter will be hoping to step on the podium once again on the 23rd of August.
Racing for RAF Reserves BMW Rock supported rider Peter Hickman found luck in short supply at Thruxton last weekend and was twice forced to retire. Initially qualifying in sixth place, the 28-year old was running in eighth in the early stages of the first race only for it to be red flagged due to an oil spill. Starting again from sixth place for the re-started race, his clutch started slipping on lap six, and with no drive he was reluctantly forced to retire.
Conversely he believes the team also made a giant leap forward at Thruxton. Which will put them in a stronger position for Cadwell Park in round eight: "It has been a tough start to the season but I feel that we made a big breakthrough at Thruxton and found something that we had been struggling with before and that made a big difference. That is why we were fast and Thruxton and although we had problems in the races, that was just down to luck and us having none last weekend.
"I am looking forward to Cadwell Park - it's my home race and I think that it is a technical circuit where track knowledge does give you an advantage and is so important. That's probably why it does tend to throw up some different results and people at the front. If I was honest, I would say I was aiming for the podium at Thruxton if we hadn't had the problems.
"The top six will be really hard now for us before the Showdown but we are going to take it race by race and we should always be aiming for the top six in the races and knocking on the door for the podium finishes. We had a great result last year at Cadwell Park so if we can start off with a good result there then I would be really happy!"
In the Motorpoint British Supersport Championship Rock supported team Gearlink Kawasaki had a steady weekend. Glenn Irwin was sixth in race one and a strong fourth in race two. Luke Hedger gained a seventh and fifth and Ben Wilson was eighth and seventh.
Gearlink Kawasaki had their hands full trying to find a suitable set-up for the extremely fast and bumpy circuit. Luke Hedger was the quickest Gearlink Kawasaki rider in qualifying and he placed in sixth place on the grid for the opening 12-lap sprint race, Glenn was seventh and Ben in tenth.
Irwin was able to ride a consistent race despite several exchanges of positions, getting up to fifth place at one point. He was just beaten to the line and finished in sixth. In race two Glenn started from eighth place and was sixth after the opening lap. He was locked for the entire 18 laps in a battle for a podium position; Glenn worked hard to stay with the pack and moved through to finish in a great fourth place.
Luke Hedger was once again riding consistently well at Thruxton and despite a bad start in the Sprint race he worked hard over the 12 laps setting some strong lap times in the closing stages to secure seventh. He started from fifth for the main feature race on Sunday. He held his position after the opening lap and dropped back to seventh on lap five. He was also involved in the same battle as Glenn and rode a consistent race to finish in fifth overall.
Ben worked to find a set-up for his Gearlink Kawasaki to suit his riding style around the very fast track. Qualifying in tenth place, he got one of his super starts and was seventh after lap one. He was locked in a battle with his two team-mates throughout the race and was eighth at the end of the 12 laps. In race two Ben battled hard and finished in a respectable seventh place.
Glenn Irwin: "I want to ignore the results on Friday and Saturday and thank the Gearlink Kawasaki team for the work and effort they put in today, they were amazing. Michael showed his experience and knowledge within the sport and with the skill of Aaron they helped to get my bike singing today. I messed up during the race and I'm the first to admit that. The Championship isn't over yet and I will make sure I'll be pushing to win more races this year."
Ben Wilson: "It was a steady weekend for me and the Gearlink Kawasaki team. I was struggling again with set-up and it made it a little difficult in the first race. In race two the bike was feeling much better and I was catching the big pack in front of me. I had a big moment around Church and my foot came off the peg and caught under the back wheel, it unsettled my rhythm and by the time I re-grouped it was too late, I can't wait to get to my local circuit of Cadwell in a couple of weeks."
Luke Hedger: "I'm really happy with another handful of solid Championship points this weekend. I managed to be consistent and set some good times. We got some good results and we have made some good progress through the weekend."
Rock rider Josh Elliott and the Morello Racing team got their 2015 Pirelli National Superstock 1000cc Championship campaign back on track at Thruxton on Sunday with a strong second place seeing him maintain his title lead. The Northern Irishman had qualified in third for Sunday"s 15-lap race and by the end achieved an excellent second place.
Team-mate John Ingram was hit by fuel pump problems in qualifying, which left him back in 26th and on the ninth row of the grid. Sadly a broken wire on his quickshifter on the opening lap meant he had to pull in to retire with the race barely underway.
Josh Elliott: "I made a bit of a mistake in counting down the laps and thought there was two laps to go when there was actually only one. As a result, I wasn"t defending my line on the last lap but fair play to Alastair, he had good speed and was able to get by. I"ve broken my humerous too which has made it a bit difficult through the turns but the Morello Racing team gave me a great bike this weekend so we"ll keep chipping away and look to get back to winning ways as soon as possible."
Steve Buckenham, Team Owner: "It"s been a mixed weekend for the team and although we"re delighted to see Josh back on the podium, it"s also a bit disappointing not to have taken the win. We said all along that we didn"t want him to be leading on the final lap as the run to the chicane always sees slipstreaming and overtaking manoeuvres take place but, unfortunately, he thought there was one lap to go and was leading when he should have been second – Alastair did to Josh what he planned to do to him! We"re still leading the way though and the Championship is in our hands so with four rounds to go, we"ll be doing everything to ensure it stays that way."
"Unfortunately, the other riders in the team didn"t fare so well and after issues in qualifying left him deep on the grid, a small wire broke on John"s bike and the bike wouldn"t rev beyond 12,000 rpm so he had little option other than to retire. With Lee, we couldn"t find a set-up that he was comfortable with and he struggled a bit with his confidence throughout. We didn"t want him to be riding at the back and not be happy so we opted to sit the races out. Hopefully, all three riders will enjoy good fortune next time out."
Round eight the MCE British Superbike Championship takes place at Cadwell Park from the 21st to the 23rd of July. Including supporting events such as the FIM Sidecar World Championship, Motorpoint British Supersport Championship, Pirelli National Superstock 1000 and 600 Championship and British Motostar.
In Motocross news Rock supported Buildbase Honda rider Kristian Whatley made a winning return as he romped to two race wins at the penultimate round of the Pirelli Masters series held at the Foxhill circuit. Whatley who was recently side lined due to a second operation to his left collarbone showed that he had lost none of his speed despite his forced layoff as he romped to a brace of comfortable triumphs at the former Grand Prix track.
In the first of the two lap sprints, the Buildbase Honda rider immediately found himself in second place as the pack rounded the first turn and soon took full control moving into first place. Whatley was able to ride his own race and looked both smooth and fast as he crossed the line over seven seconds ahead of his nearest rival.
Race two saw Kristian ride himself clear of the chasing field come the end of lap one. Again, looking comfortable aboard the four stroke four-fifty machine Whatley put in a series of strong laps to stretch his advantage, so much so that he was able to reduce the pace in the closing part of the race and still take the flag over ten seconds in front of the eventual runner-up.
Whatley now takes a solid lead in the overall standings heading into the final round of the Pirelli Masters at Whitby next month and looks odds on favourite to lift the title if all continues to go to plan for the twenty-five year old.
Kristian's Estonian team-mate took time out from his normal domestic duties today and made a one off MXGP appearance at the famous Lommel sand circuit in Belgium where he recorded two respectable top ten finishes against World class opposition.
Buildbase Honda MX Team Manager David Thorpe summed up the day by saying "It is good to have Kristian back riding, racing and winning. It's been a difficult period for Kristian over the last couple of months, this being his second comeback in a relatively short time. Again today he has showed what he is capable of when he is riding fit and well, and there is no doubt he has both the speed and skill to run up the front in all the domestic championships."
"Gert can also be pleased with his day's work, typically he has ground out two solid results on a rough and difficult track and up against some fast guys."
Whatley confirmed he was pleased to be back racing. "Not being able to ride or race is the worse thing for any rider. Getting over the first operation was bad enough, but then to injure the same shoulder again really sucked. Anyway hopefully I can now stay injury free and have a strong end to the season, starting with two good wins today."
Rock Oil supported rider Tai Woffinden maintained his lead in the world championship standings this past weekend, achieving second place in the Swedish FIM Speedway Grand Prix on Saturday. The 2013 world champion is currently nine points clear of his nearest rival with 80 in total.
Tai had been dogged by illness this week but happy in his current position halfway through the championship. He said: “I’ve felt pretty ill all week. I’ve had a cold and I ate some bad chicken in Poland last week, so I haven’t felt the best. So to come here and ride like I have done, feeling like that, is a great achievement for me. I’m looking forward to the next meeting.
“Everybody knows how long the season is. I just have to keep my head down and keep focused.”
The sixth round has been held at the G&B Arena in Malilla, famous for its torrential downpours. Tai was impressed with the level of support from the volunteers who helped prepare the track in time for the race: “Full credit to the people who worked here.
"I woke up and saw rain and it was coming down heavily throughout the day, so to even get this meeting on was an achievement. Congratulations to them; it proved to be a good race track.”
Fellow Rock rider Matej Žagar just missed out on a podium finish with fourth place on the night and in the current standings overall with 53 points. Chris 'Bomber' Harris is in 11th place with 32 points and Troy Batchelor 13th with 30 points.
Round seven of the Speedway FIM World Championship will be held Saturday the 8th August 2015 at the Kjærgaard Danish FIM Speedway Grand Prix, Horsens, Denmark.
Peter Hickman maintained his 13th place overall in the title standings for the RAF Reserves BMW team. Despite a loose foot peg, he pushed hard in the second half of the race on Sunday to be ultimately rewarded with three hard earned points.
Peter Hickman: “It’s been another weekend where things just haven’t gone for us and we’re in general need of a bit of luck at the moment. I made a good start in the first race and had made a couple of places off the line but when we got to Druids the whole pack was bunched up and O’Halloran hit the back of Kiyo which left me with nowhere to go. To have a race end so soon through no fault of our own was hugely disappointing and frustrating.”
“I was way back on the grid for the second race and it was hard to make any passes as the riders in front were all lapping at a similar pace. To make matters worse, my foot kept slipping off the foot peg which I thought was oil but turned out to be a loose foot peg. I kept going and gave it 100% the whole way but I don’t feel that we deserve to be in 13th place. All we can do is keep working hard and hope that the tide will turn soon.”
Lee Hardy, Team Owner: “It’s definitely not been our weekend again and that was proved in race one when Peter was the unlucky rider to be in the wrong place at the wrong time when Jason O’Halloran crashed. There’s nothing you can do about it but it just made Peter’s life a lot harder in race two. He was deeper on the grid and it was hard to get going with the lap times being so close amongst everyone.”
“The loose foot peg naturally made matters worse so full credit to Peter for finishing where he did. He battled hard throughout the race and whilst three points might not be many, he certainly deserved every single one of them. It’s not where we want to be though so we need to start getting back up to the sharp end from the next round onwards. I’d also like to say a big thank you to the whole team and all the sponsors for their continued hard work and support.”
Luke Hedger had the strongest weekend out of the Gearlink Kawasaki riders and gained a sixth place and seventh place. Ben Wilson was looking at two finishes this weekend and achieved seventh and ninth in the two Supersport races. Glenn Irwin crashed out of race one and fought hard in race two to finish in eighth position. Placing him in third in the overall Championship standings.
Glenn Irwin: "I'm really disappointed about the weekend as we had a lot of problems throughout and we weren't able to find a set-up that worked well. We put in some good times but just not consistently. I wanted to fight for my lead in the Championship but that just wasn't possible this weekend at Brands.
The crash in race one was totally out of my hands, the bike locked up and spat me off and I don't know if it did some internal damage as I really struggled in race two with the front end. I really didn't want to crash again and just wanted to try and bring it home in one piece and get a few valuable Championship points."
Ben Wilson: "I came to Brands wanting two race finishes after the shocking few races I've had but I was hoping I might have been a little higher up the pecking order. It is so frustrating fighting for a top ten place when I used to be fighting for a podium. I need to get things sorted out and have a good second half to the season."
Luke Hedger: "It was a good weekend and I was in the top six for most of the weekend and again managed to go faster in each session. We had a few set-up troubles at the start of the weekend but we got that sorted out for the races, I was really pleased to be top Gearlink Kawasaki rider in both races and thank them for their help again."
Morello Racing experienced a difficult weekend with Pirelli National Superstock 1000cc Championship riders Josh Elliott and John Ingram both crashing out of the 16 lap race. Even with the weekend results Elliott is still in first place in the current standings with 135 points, a clear 22 point lead. In the British Superbike Championship races Lee Costello crashed out in the opening 20-lap race and then sadly forced to retire from the second on the eighth lap after his clutch started to slip.
Steve Buckenham, Team Owner: “It’s definitely been a day to forget with not a single finish taken. Josh took another excellent pole position and was again looking strong in the race but he got drawn into a battle with Alastair Seeley and unfortunately came off second best. I’m confident he had the pace to win the race but you have to remember he’s only 21 and he’ll learn from today’s race. It’s the first mistake he’s made all year so he’ll bounce back next time without doubt.”
“John had a small issue with the bike in qualifying that left him lower down the grid than he would have liked but made a good start and was trying to keep in touch with the top ten when he lost the rear and got launched. Riders were dropping like flies in the Superbike races too and Lee sadly lost the front end on the final lap just as he was going for 17th place. In the second, the clutch began to slip and he had to retire so we’ll simply forget about this weekend and look to bounce back at Thruxton in two weeks time.”
Thankfully all of the Rock supported riders are in good shape and fit to ride in the next round. Sadly not all of the riders were as lucky, as PBM's Stuart Easton suffered a lower leg fracture and ligament damage to his knee in a frightening accident during the first British Superbike Championship race. We wish him a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the track soon.
In Speedway news Rock supported rider Tai Woffinden achieved 8 points in the fifth round of the 2015 FIM Speedway Grand Prix. Despite a watersoaked meeting in Daugavpils, he ended with a nine-point lead in the World Championship standings.
Tai Woffinden: “It was just one of those nights where I really had mixed fortunes. I’m pretty pleased to come away with eight points under my belt and a nine-point lead in the championship.
“Daugavpils isn’t the easiest track to pass on and there were a couple of races where I didn’t make the best of starts. I’m pleased it’s out the way, I didn’t have a great meeting last year there.
“Looking back at the weekend, I have to say I'm pretty satisfied with it all.”
In the current Championship standings fellow Rock riders Chris 'Bomber' Harris is currently 13th with 27 points, Matej Žagar is in 6th position with 40 points. Troy Batchelor had a great result finishing third at the Latvian GP. Troy moved up to 12th in the standings with 28 points, if he's able to maintain his form he'll have a guaranteed place in the 2016 series.
The next round of the MCE British Superbike Championship takes place at Thruxton, Hampshire from the 31st of July to the 2nd of August.
